My name is Maryssa, and I am currently studying Political Science at Florida Gulf Coast University. Starting early June, I will be traveling to Peru, Lithuania, Greece, Italy, Germany, Singapore, and Malaysia with a grant awarded from the Circumnavigators Foundation and FGCU Foundation to research the effects of globalized trade on empowerment based regional policy programs related to food security. This project is directly tied to service to my community, specifically a food forest I planted for a civic engagement project at a women’s shelter. After independent research in Geneva, Switzerland last summer, I found that current globalized trade policies might pose a threat to projects like this one abroad. Deeply interested in promoting community resilience, I will be interviewing trade experts, academics, and small farmers in order to understand their perceived strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of globalized trade policy. I’m looking forward to documenting my travels through this blog, and I hope you’ll join me!
